How Soon do you need your passport?
You cannot get your passport here if you need it today! If you need your passport today or tomorrow you need to rush to an official passport agency and get in line. There are propbably no appointments available but you can try anyway: (201) 369-3470. The earlier you get there the sooner you'll get out but expect to spend your entire day there. You'll need to bring the requirements checklist. A line will form outside the agency. You will then given a number and enter a queue system to submit your application. Only a certain number of applications will be accpeted each day so get there early. You are not guaranteed to recieve your passport the same day. Passport reciepents must be physically present, including minors! Some "for-profit" companies offer passport service within 24 hours. If you need your passport within the next two weeks call right away to get an appointment (201) 369-3470. You can get your passport expedited at an agency. You will still need to go in person to an official passport agency but your line will be shorter. You'll need to bring the requirements checklist. Count on spending a few hours at the agency. Passport reciepents must be physically present, including minors! Some "for-profit" companies offer passport service within 24 hours.
If you can wait three weeks to get your passport you can get expedited service by mail.

Hudson County Clerk's Office: Division of Passports U.S. Passport REQUIREMENTS
1. Proof of United States Citizenship:
You may prove U.S. Citizenship with any one of the following:
(NOTE: If applicant has changed his/her name from what it says on any items proving citizenship, but has not changed the name on his/her primary ID, then applicant must provide an original marriage license or court order name change documentation with his or her proof of citizenship.
- An Unexpired U.S. Passport (Passports valid for 5 years must also be accompanied by a valid birth record.)
- Certified U.S. Birth Certificate issued by the city or state NOTE: A certified birth certificate has a registrar's raised, embossed, impressed or multicolored seal, registrar's signature, and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar's office, which must be within 1 year of your birth.As of April, 2011, The Department of State requires that the full names of the applicant's parent(s) be listed on all certified birth certificates, regardless of the applicant's age. Mutilated or altered birth records are not accepted, All birth certificates issued by the \"Hudson County Bureau of Vital Statistics\" are no longer valid and can not be accepted as proof of citizenship.
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
- Naturalization Certificate
- Certificate of Citizenship & Birth Certificate (Must appear in English or with English translation)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS (15 & younger) & 16 YEAR OLDS
- Applicants who are 16 and younger must appear in person at the time of application.
- Applicants who are 16 years old are only required to have one parent present.
- Minor Applicants - 15 and younger - must have both parents present, or the parent with sole custody.
SHARED CUSTODY
- If custody is shared of the minor, both parents/legal guardians must be present with the child during the time of application. Both Parent's names must appear on the child's birth certificate. Both parents must also present Proof of Identity/valid ID (See list below) as evidence of their identity.
- If two parents share custody of a minor, and only one parent is able to be present at the time of application, the non-appearing parent must complete and have notarized a \"Statement of Consent Minor Under 16\" form and a photocopy of the non-appearing parent's valid form ID (front & back) must also be supplied at the time of application (See list below). SINGLE PARENT / SOLE CUSTODY
- If the mother's name is the only name that appears on the minor's birth record, then only the mother must be present at the time of application with the minor and must present Proof of Identity/valid form of ID (See list below)
- If both mother and father's name appear on the minor applicant's birth record, but only one parent has legal custody of the minor, then that parent must show proof of sole custody at the time of application, and must present Proof of Identity/valid form of ID (See list below).
2. Proof of Identity: You may prove your identity with any one of these, if you are recognizable:
- Current or Recently Expired* U.S. Passport (*expired within the last 6 months)
- Current, valid driver's license/State ID (if not a NJ ID, then applicant must show a second form of ID)
- Applicants who are 17 years old may use a provisional license as Proof of Identity.
- Naturalization Certificate (issued within the last 3 months)
- Current, valid government Employee ID (which includes Federal, State, Municipal IDs)
- Current, valid official military ID
If none of these are available, you will need:
A. Some signature documents, not acceptable alone as ID.
(Examples include: a combination of documents, such as your Social Security card, credit card, bank card, library card, etc.)
AND
B. A person who can vouch for you. He/she must:
- Have known you for at least 2 years,
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident,
- Have valid ID, and
- Fill out a Form DS-71 in the presence of a passport agent.
3. ONE Passport Photo: (Passport photos can be taken in the County Clerk's Office) If you are providing your own, your photographs must be:
- 2x2 inches in size
- Identical
- Taken within the past 6 months, showing clear likeness to the bearer
- Color
- Full face, front view with a plain white or light-colored background
- Between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head
- Taken in normal street attire
Uniforms should not be worn in photographs except religious attire that is worn daily.
Do not wear a hat or headgear that obscures the hair or hairline.
If you normally wear prescription glasses, a hearing device, wig or similar articles, they should be worn for your picture.
Dark glasses or nonprescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless you need them for medical reasons. A medical certificate may be required.
NOTE: Vending machine photos are not generally acceptable

4(b). Application Fee - U.S. Passport CARD w/ Routine 4-6 Week Service:
A Passport Card can only be use for land and sea travel; it can not be used for airline flights, regardless of the destination.

For EXPEDITED PROCESSING (2-3 WEEK DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE), add the following additional fees to your regular passport processing fees: (This service is only available for Passport Book applications.)
add $60 check or money order payment to US Dept. of State for rush processing + $14.85 for return overnight delivery from the Dept. of State's processing office.
also add $16.95 (Cash or money order) for one-way overnight delivery payable to the County Clerk's Office
*please note the $16.95 overnight fee is mandated as per the U.S. Postal Service
For example, if you are an adult, first time applicant, and you wish to expedite your application, you would submit a check or money order payable to: US Department of State for the total amount of: $184.85 ($110 application fee + $60 expedite fee + $14.85 return overnight fee from fed. gov't) + your $41.95 cash or money order to the Hudson County Clerk's Office. ($25 County Clerk application processing fee + $16.95 one-way overnight delivery fee).
Grand total cost for an adult expedited US Passport with overnight delivery: $226.80
For example, if you are a minor, first time applicant, and you wish to expedite your application, you would submit a check or money order payable to: US Department of State for the total amount of: $154.85 ($80 application fee + $60 expedite fee + $14.85 return overnight fee from fed. gov't) + your $41.95 cash or money order to the Hudson County Clerk's Office. ($25 County Clerk application processing fee + $16.95 one-way overnight delivery fee).
Grand total cost for an minor expedited US Passport with overnight delivery: $196.80
A FILE SEARCH (add $150) can be performed, if you were issued a U. S. Passport and have since lost the passport and any additional proof of citizenship (see above), but wish to re-apply for a U. S. Passport. During this process, the federal government will search their records for the initial proof of your citizenship that was submitted and will then either approve or reject your application based on their findings.
