How Soon do you need your passport?
You cannot get your passport here if you need it today! If you need your passport today or tomorrow you need to rush to an official passport agency and get in line. There are propbably no appointments available but you can try anyway: (717) 337-9834. The earlier you get there the sooner you'll get out but expect to spend your entire day there. You'll need to bring the requirements checklist. A line will form outside the agency. You will then given a number and enter a queue system to submit your application. Only a certain number of applications will be accpeted each day so get there early. You are not guaranteed to recieve your passport the same day. Passport reciepents must be physically present, including minors! Some "for-profit" companies offer passport service within 24 hours. If you need your passport within the next two weeks call right away to get an appointment (717) 337-9834. You can get your passport expedited at an agency. You will still need to go in person to an official passport agency but your line will be shorter. You'll need to bring the requirements checklist. Count on spending a few hours at the agency. Passport reciepents must be physically present, including minors! Some "for-profit" companies offer passport service within 24 hours.
If you can wait three weeks to get your passport you can get expedited service by mail.
Prepare everyting in the requirements checklist.
Write "EXPEDITE" clearly on the outside of the mailing envelope and mail the completed application to:

The Prothonotary of Adams County is the official acceptance agent for NEW PASSPORTS ONLY. Our office DOES NOT accept applications for RENEWALS. For instructions on how to renew your passport please refer to the U.S. Department of State Website or contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) toll-free 1-877-487-2778 Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM Eastern Time (excluding federal holidays).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW PASSPORTS
BEFORE ARRIVING AT THE PROTHONOTARY OFFICE PLEASE BE PREPARED WITH THE FOLLOWING:
APPLICATION: These forms are available for download from the U.S. Department of State's Website
Please print legibly using BLACK INK only.
Complete but (DO NOT SIGN UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO) the application for a U.S. Passport.
PROOF OF U.S. CITIZENSHIP: Submit a previous U.S. passport or certified birth certificate.
A certified birth certificate will bear the seal of the Department of Health, a Division of Vital Records.
Certified birth certificates MUST list the full names of the parents of the applicant.
PROOF OF IDENTITY: You may submit the following items containing your signature and photograph
Driver's license (not temporary or learner's license)
Military identification
Federal, state, or municipal government employee identification card
Contact your local travel agent for photo service locations.
These photographs have specific requirements. School photos and the like will not be accepted.

Fees:
Passport application fees are non-refundable processing fees and are retained by the Department of State whether or not a passport is issued.
Because of periodic changes to passport fees, they will not be included in this publication.

The Adams County Prothonotary accepts checks or money orders as methods of payments for passports. Please bring at least two (2) checks or money orders with you.
Special Requirements for Children:
To submit an application for a child(ren) under age 16 both parents or the child's legal guardian(s) must appear WITH the minor child(ren) and present the following:
Evidence of the child's U.S. citizenship
Evidence of the child's relationship to parent/guardians and parent/guardian identification. For additional information please refer to the U.S. Department of State Website.
